Internet Security Camera?

Thinking about putting up a camera that overlooks my front yard and driveway. I'm on the road a lot, and it would be nice to be able to get on the internet and see home. I could keep an eye on the place, and it would keep me from getting homesick.

Anyone do anything like this? I've got high-speed internet at the house, and figured I could install a wireless router. I thought about mounting the camera outside, but outdoor enclosures look like they're pretty expensive, and I think the snow/ice would probably block it sonner or later. Figured I'd mount one inside, looking out a window.

Anyone got any recommendations for products? I've searched the web and Best Buy, but am still a little confused as to whats out there, and what would work well for what I'm looking for. Also, would i get a good view out a window from an internet camera? Or would it constantly be subject to glare?

Do you want a web camera that hooks up to your computer or a standard CCTV camera and lens plus the enclosure ?

Also do you want to install a stationary camera or have one that you can control (Pan and Tilt)from your Internet based OTR (On the road) location ?

I have most of the standard CCTV components the Camera, Lens, Enclosure, depending on what range you would like the camera to have and what lens you would want to use with the camera.

I have a few Pan - tilt units but they aren't cheap $250.00 - $500.00 range.

You have many choices to make both in what camera to purchase and lens combinations and if you want a system that is 100% Internet or make a CCTV system work with a Internet interface.

I used a Dlink pan tilt zoom camera. This is one of the many I have around my house. You should be able to check it out using a "guest" or "demo" name with no password. It will install an activeX program which will allow you to move the camera by clicking on the image. Really neat, it will email you motion activation and outages. It can also be sent to a server via FTP.

Do they have one that'll shoot the neighbor's dog in the butt with a BB when he tears into my trash? I'd want a really high speed connection for that one.

It should work good. The general manager at the place I retired from last year had one hooked to his office computor, and on his home computor. He had several cameras and could watch almost all areas in the production areas on all shifts. How would you like to work for that guy. This all happened after I left. Stan

Go look around at www.supercircuits.com. That will give you a flavor of what is available.

I've installed about 20-30 cameras at the university for dorm security that are tied back to digital video recorders which store everything on a hard drive enclosed in a unit that looks about like a VCR. They tie to the DVR by coax, but the DVR itself is network accessible for access from anywhere. Not cheap, but great access since it records a full week at a time for about 8-12 cameras simultaneously.

D-Link makes a camera that can be either wired into the network or talk via wireless. It works fine - gives a decent black/white picture, but don't count on the "record to PC" feature to work worth a hoot. The software is very buggy. Really only good for watching the actual picture real-time (while it takes place).

I also installed a buttonhole camera about the size of a dime in an air vent (under instruction from the local law enforcement) to catch a guy who kept coming into one of our labs to search for child porn. It was tied back straight to a VCR. Worked great and was pretty cheap, but very labor intensive.

I wouldn't be too scared of an outdoor camera - they make a ton of different type of enclosures. Plus, that would make it easier to use features like infrared for night vision, movement sensing for not wasting time with a "blank picture", and/or picking up audio, too, if you wanted...

Dave, that camera in your house looks like it would fit the bill! Great picutre quality. Where is that camera located? Is it mounted outside? Is it inside looking out a window? Is it looking through a window screen? I thought I saw a grid pattern on the picture, but couldn't be sure.

Any idea what brand of camera they have at the town center? That was a pretty good picture also.

Looking on the DLink website, it looks like my Windows 98 box might not work, I'd probably have to upgrade to Windows XP or Vista.

Our family is pretty big, and everyone is spread across the state, so I know everyone would be tickeld to know they could log on and see a video of the old homestead.
