Iowa Red Star Chickens

This is the second time I have had these. Man they lay eggs like crazy. Only problem is the racoons like to eat them if we forget to lock chickens up at night. Anyone else have luck with these, I get them from the Amish 3 weeks before they start laying 7 dollars a bird. I sell eggs for 2 dollars a doz and can't keep up with demand from customers.

When the wife had chickens Red Star was her favorite. Healthy, good natured, and good layers.
She thought they were a cross between Rhode Island Red and White Leghorn. Maybe they can be called whatever part of the country they're in!

If you are selling for $2 per dozen you should be selling out. I don't think $2 even cover feed costs. I have been selling for 4 or 5 per dozen, and selling out. I'm not making money at it, but I don't want to give it away.

For layers I have switched to Bovanes. They are supposedly a RI Red hen and White Leghorn rooster but I don't know if that is true. They are the most tame things and lay jumbo chocolate eggs. They lay 100% right up to 18 months and about 85-90% for a year after that.

around here you can buy large brown eggs all day long for 2.00 a dozen,...and like others say, don't know how they cover costs
