I have a 8n that i just picked up and im not so sure if it is a true 8n or a 9n the motor says 8n rite on the block but the rims and bolt pattern are spred way apart like the 9n is there any way to truely identify the tracktor? Did some 8ns have the wide bolt pattern ? if this helps the motor has a front distriptor any help thanks

9N made from 1939 to 1942. 2N made from 1942 to 1947. Both the 9N and 2N have 3 speed trannys. 8N made from 1948 to 1952 and have 4 speed trannys. But you can put an 8N engine in a 9N or 2N or the other way around. So if what you have has a 3 spped then its a 2N or 9N with an 8N engine but if it has a 4 speed then its an 8N

jaybird.........NO...NO...NO!!! 4-speed tranny gutts will NOT fit the 3-speed tranny CASE. Bottom line, we consider the tranny to be the definitive delineation between 3-speed 9N/2N or 4-speed 8N. There are other clues like the 3-point hydraulic pump controls butt'cha gotta DISASSEMBLE the tractor to find out. Trust us, tranny shifter count is way eazier.......Dell

Lets look at this from the other end.

As far as I know you can put a 9N/2N rear end on a 8N tractor.
