Is it normal....

....for it (1944 2N) to have a lot of gear noise from the trans? It has 5 gallons of new fluid in it. When I coast down a hill in neutral there is no noise. Put it in any gear and there is a pretty constant howl. Not the first time I heard it in a tractor. Just wondering if it is normal on this type?

They have normally noisy straight cut gears. Later 2ns has the input gear helical, but not much noise reduction as all others remain straight, whereas 8Ns went to all helical.

My '41 9n makes a whine when the sherman OD is engaged.I have had old cars &trucks[30s-50s]that had whining noises ,some intermitant, some steady and I have taken them apart, changed bearings etc.sometimes it helped sometimes not.Like someone said on other reply some just do it naturally.Maybe something as simple as a different fluid MAY make a difference

I have a 53 Chev five window pickup truck. It has made a little noise ever since I bought it in 71 but got louder it seemed so I pull the transmission and replace all the bearings. Put it back together and it quited it down some but still makes noise. I guess next would be the rear end but you know if I don't use it there is no noise! And that's mostly what I do with it. I may be getting a little lazy????

OK...well it makes it kinda hard to hear that nicely tuned engine I worked so hard on. Does make me pause a little when I get off and walk away. It's a nice sounding tractor when not in gear! Love a four cylinder tractor. Thanks for the replies. It doesn't leak anymore so I know the fluid is still in there so I'll just get used to it.
