Is it possible?

Is it possible to put a 4 cylinder gas out of an M or similar into a 706? Mostly I'm wondering if it will / can be made to mate up at the bell housing end without a huge machining project? Thanks, Sam

An idea wandered through my mind that involved a modified C281 and a 706 with a bad D282. Yes, it would be simpler and cheaper to rebuild the D282 or find one with a gas engine already installed. However, simplicity and minimum cost were not the main objectives. Thanks, Sam

While I agree that is a great engine and would certainly make a tractor out of it, diesel is unfortunately not an option for what I'm thinking of. The more I think about this though the more issues I come up with. The vast difference in working RPM of the engine for one. Thanks, Sam

I think that it is very possible to bolt in but your pto will only turn about 280-300 rpm . However a good 281 will do most anything that a 282 will except turn 2500 rpm all day.

I suppose it would be possible with the slower engine speed to figure out the ratio and run the engine at the correct speed and use the 1000rpm shaft at 540 rpm. Thanks, Sam

If it were mine and I needed a working tractor I'd consider a DT360 from a bus, easier to install than a 5.9 cummins, just need the front and rear adapter for a 766, 400 series adapters from the larger tractors might work too.
