Is this an 851?

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and, in fact, new to Ford Tractors. I recently picked up an old Ford for a great price (to use, not to show). I was told it was a 501, but my understanding is that 501 is an "offset."

I've tried to read the model and serial number behind the starter, but the metal is too pitted to be able to make it out, but I've deduced some things I've found/seen/read elsewhere and would appreciate confirmation or correction.

Decoding casting numbers on the transmission it's a January 1959 manufacture. Being that early in the year for the trans, I'm assuming the tractor is a '59.

Based on the location of the serial number (I can see one digit) being above & behind the starter, it seems it's later than the "N's" and "NAAs" so at least a hundred series.

Base on the casting number on the engine (310609) I read somewhere in this forum that it's a '58-'59 172 CI engine, so an 801 series.

It's got a 5-speed trans, 3-point lift and non-live PTO, so an 851. The paint is different, but it does have the "egg shell" grill, again indicating an 851.

Am I off-base or do I have a 1959 Ford 851 Powermaster?

Thanks for your help!

Well, I was trying to post pictures but I guess I don't have that figured out. Maybe someone could help me with that, too! ;)

does it look something like this? if so, great looking tractor, would take a while to paint, but the different colors do add to the overall look,
I thought that the 5 speeds had the power clutch, but maybe not,
I drove one for my neighbor when I was a kid, but never used any implements that required the pto so I would not know,

we had a 1957 TO35 Ferguson and it did have to the power clutch.

you would have thought by this time most tractors would have had the power clutch.

Yes, it looks like that one but nearly as purty. The top metal is all grey, though, and it has a straight bumper instead of the guard this one has.

As for the clutch, I may be wrong. I just read about it yesterday and haven't had a chance to try. It seems like the PTO and transmission all engaged at once, but there may have been the 2-stages.

The 801 Series could have the 5 speed with or without a two
stage clutch, so it could have live PTO or it might not. From
the height of your clutch pedal and the dual pinned clevis I
would guess it is an 861 with the two stage clutch and live PTO.

Awesome looking rear tires there! And pie weight mounts too.
All you need are the wedges to get you a lot of extra weight.

Thanks for the pics (I finally figured it out...FAQs are a good thing!).

Yeah, he said he just bought the tires last year and all he did was cut his 10 acres a few times a year.

(quoted from post at 19:44:28 02/15/17) Hello,

So maybe an 861 (I'll check for the live PTO tomorrow). Next question: The previous owner put an awful seat on it, with no spring! What type of seat would the 861 (or even 851) would have had?

Thanks!

I think the tractor was a selectospeed due to the yellow paint on the trans like it has been replaced and the hole in the right hood panel for the PTO shifter.
