Used oven cleaner to stripe grease. Then to carwash.Wire wheeled then sanded with orbital.used laquer thinner to wipe down.I used a alkalide enamel to prime(Van Sickle) Budget is tight.Going to use same name paint with harder, clear cote is available. Is this the right way?

Sounds pretty good to me. The clear coat won't buy you much since that paint is a billion year old technology anyway. Just my 2 cents.

Everything but the lacquer thinner part. I used to use it too. (25 years ago) The oils in the thinner are incompatible with alot of topcoats. I have got buy with using the same reducer as the paint takes. The best thing is a body solvent such as napa kleanz-ez or equivalent.
