Is this thermostat correct?

Desprately needing a thermostat I looked online at tractor supply, got the part number for the inline thermostat. Called them up and they had it. I've had one on order with the tractor store I normally use for weeks. I really need a thermostat for my newly rebuilt engine. When I got there this is the one they had. Package says 160 degree but the bottom of the thermostat says 180 degree. I perfer a 180 degree. Knowing that it must have been packaged wrong I bought it any ways hoping that being it was a 180 degree they were made differently. It fits inside a 2N8260 hose very tight. Y'all recon it'll work anyway's

Yep that is a 180* thermo. and will work on your 2N. They do go in the top hose, sometimes very tight.
The flat side goes toward the radiator, with the sping and pelet, faceing the engine. Possision the thermo. approx. 3 1/2 to 4" from the engine.

You bought the right one.!! :)

Thanks GB in MT. I knew it didn't look like the others I've seen. Next question, I guess the others(160 degree) go somewhere midway in the hose. Since this one is made the way it is with the flat area and then having the collar around it at the bottom. Does it slip up inside the upper radiator neck??

You only need the one. you decide wheter you want a 160 or 180 degree one. Like GB says 3 1/2 to 4 inches from the engine. GB forget to tell you to put a STEEL hose clamp around the thermostat on the flat area so that the rib is on the engine side of the clamp. that will keep the thermostat from being pushed up to the radiator. Ask GB why! :)

preacher........AFAIK, pointy end toward the raditor ...ie... flatback toward the flathead water nozzle. TIP: cutt'chur OLD radiator hoze out and replace it with new SOFT radiator hoze. The straight upper radiator hoze is CHEAP .......Dell

Does it slip up inside the upper radiator neck??

Like GB sez - "Position the thermostat approximately 3 1/2 to 4" from the engine"

It slides into the upper radiator hose - About mid span between the cylinder head and radiator neck.

NO!!! As I said above....the thermostat, goes in the rubber rad. hose, blunt end toward the rad.! about 3 1/2" to 4" away from the head tube.!
The spring and heat sensor goes toward the HEAD.
Install a hose clamp around the hose, in front of the thermo. to keep it from moveing up toward the radiator!!!!
You want the thermo. as close to the head, as possible to get proper opening of the thermo.!!!!!

Sorry about this reply, it may not be enough info, trying to use the Hospital sat. computer,......and I got really screwed up nerves right now!!!!

You know how many N's I've seen with thermostats?..... About 5! And I've wrenched on a good number of them over the last 20+ years. Never really saw the need.

" Never really saw the need. "

I disagree. As did the engineers who designed the N engine.

Being once a certified master mechanic for Chevrolet, I really understand the need for a thermostat(nuff said). Why spend hundreds to completly rebuild an engine, put in a new radiator, & Ect. then leave out the thermostat? With 3/4 of the radiator covered with cardboard it has trouble making the 160 degree mark pulling a bushhog. As I've stated before, I want to build a very reliable and long lasting worker, Thank You for all the wisdom passed along guy's!

That is a scabby looking replacement 9/2/8N thermostat but if installed correctly it likely will function. The 9/2/8N gasoline burning engines were all originally equipped with 160 degree thermostats. The distillate burning N's were the only N's that came with the 180 degree thermostats. Again its likely either will work fine.

Ford put thermostats in the 32 v8 engines. All good mechanics know why thermostats are used.Cold weather will fill cold running engines with condensation. The oil pump can mix water with oil.Cheap skates leave out the thermostat because they think they are saving money.New cars are running 195 degree thermostats.
