Poured some gas in my51, turned the gas on and filled the
carb and then shut the gas off. Turned the key on, pulled
the choke out and hit the starter and I couldnt believe what
happened. It immediately started up! I was so surprised I
couldnt think to shut the switch off or cut the throttle. The
throttle was about half and the engine was running smooth.
I pulled the coil wire and killed it, it has good oil pressure,
no knocks thankfully. I only wanted to see if it was going to
run at all at this time. I will get the radiator installed
tomorrow morning and fill it and see if the water pump is
any good. I set the distributor timing according to the book
and she fired right up. I only ran engine for 10 seconds.

Congrast. I know the feeling, my wife's 46 sat for 30+ years in a field. At the time I didn't know the proper setting for the throttle, it went from a long slumber to a full rip... It scared me! Needless to say, it's run great ever since. I am happy for you, keep it alive.

I have dry started 100's of engines what can go wrong.

A Ford F600 4X4 the engine sets in a hole I take the Radiator support out then I can stand on the ground and work on the engine. To give ya a I.D. of how much a P.I.T.A they are to work on The other preferred method is to back a pick up to the front of the truck and stand on the tailgate to work on them.

So I installed the engine I have a fender cover on the front cross member I like to work clean : ) and by belly likes something to rest on. I tell my helper to fire it up then all ell breaks lose. The radiator fan sucks up the fender cover the fender cove grabs the wiring harness at the alternator. All this action pulls the wiring harness out of the firewall a bit.

Its 5PM it takes me 6 to 7 hr to repair the harness that made for a long day.
