I bought a 64 4020 diesel with rebuilt engine injector pump & injectors. paid $8000. for it, I want to use it on a haybine this summer. it starts and runs great lots of power, but it smoks blue all the time. is there a way to turn down the fuel on the injection pump? black olly stuff running out of muffler pipe at the top. need help thanks.

The fuel rate setting is NOT your problem, as it is only reached at MAX LOAD.

If it was getting too much fuel at a given RPM, it would simply OVERSPEED.

Are the thermostats in place and working, so the engine is warming up?

Other causes of blue smoke and slobber are: bad injectors, poor ring seal, and need of valve work... valves may be recessed into head, causing low compression, and poor fuel burn.

I have started running Sea Foam in all my equipment. Prior to using it I had a lot of smoking, of all sorts, from my older diesel tractors.

After a couple tank fulls of the stuff my stacks have cleaned up and the tractors run and cold weather start much better. One thing I know it does is not only cleans the injectors ()black smoke), but also cleans off the carbon that piles up adjacent to them which must screw up the spray pattern.

Then for blue smoke it must cut the carbon from around the rings so that they seat/seal better and keep more of the oil in the crankcase.

For engine cleanup I would use a whole 16 oz can to a 30 gal of gas or half to half that on the smaller tractors. Then about a half to fourth that for routine maint.

Auto Parts store, in pint white/red cans. About $6 and worth every penny.

As stated before, set down the fuel devlivery will not fix your tractor. The first thing I would look at would be the injector pump timing. Retarded timing will give you symptoms that you have described. What also is not known is the quality of the engine rebuild. And whether the injectors are actually working properly. Also was the engine given a good break in after the rebuild. John Deere rebuild kits give directions on how this is done. Improper break-in will also cause an engine to wet-stack.

Thanks for the imput. I phoned the person I bought the tractor from,He said it never smoked until he had the injector pump and injectors rebuilt. He also thinks its out of time abit. So how do I retard or advance the timing, its a rosamaster pump, Do I loosen those two nuts and rotate the pump or loosen the little jam nut and turn the screw in or out on side of pump with allan wrench? thanks.
