J D 80 pumps??

I have a JD 80, with 830 head, 830 pumps, and 830 injectors. Still has 80 pistons and I don"t want to take it apart.
It is hard to start and makes a lot of grey smoke. Will using 80 injector tips to match my pistons clear up this? Can 80 tips handle full fuel 830 pumps, or will I break injector lines??

I have a 1952 R, when I first got it hard to start, lots of white/gray smoke, which is unburnt fuel. I adjusted the valves, starts good now, no smoke. maybe this will help. Jim

The 70/80/early 820 tips have 5 holes 10 dia thou for 10mm pumps. The 13mm pumps in a late 820/830/840 used 6 hole 12 thou dia tips.
Don't even think of trying it.
Something else in valve timing, valve clearance, injection timing or injection pressure is at fault.
How worn are the bores and pistons? You must have measured them when the head was off?

Model 80, all 820, 830, and 840 nozzles spray at 160° angles. The differences are the number of holes and their diameters described earlier. Therefore, your 830 tips will spray properly for the 80 pistons, just with more fuel.

Read that again. The 70,80 and early 820 injector tips are 5 X 10 thou.
The late 820,830 and 840 are 6 X 12 thou.

Perhaps you should read my post again. You will see that I mentioned the holes differ in number and diameter. I also provided the spray angle info you left out. Then I backed it all up with documentation. So stick your head back in the snow and cool down.

Alright, I was talking flow concerns not spray angles. You are correct the 70,80,820,830 & 840 all squirt at 160 degrees.
Spray angles are a much over rated topic other than the model R's odd pattern.

Is the cam much different from an 80 to a 830? Had the injection timming a little advanced, and it really hammered away. Turned it back a little, and it sounds better now. Grey smoke is still the same.

Seems lazy on the governor too. could this be related or a seperate issue?

If you look in the parts book you have been using and checking during the engine work. It shows the cam info.
The service manual tells you how to set up the throttle and rack linkage.
The gray smoke maybe coolant.
