Working on a '47 cub.
When I got this tractor it was disassembled and in boxes. Is there anything I should do to the magneto before trying to crank it?
When checking the coil, what should the resistance read?
Never worked on a magneto before, should there be a strong magnet?

I would bench check using a wire connected to a spark plug and see if i get a spark when the mag is turned over and impulses Some times the points need to be cleaned with solvent to remove a film covering them.

Clamp it in the vise. Put a visegrip on one of the lugs. Put a plug wire in the coil terminal. Hold the other end of the wire 1/4 inch away from the housing and spin it over with the visegrips. It should throw a spark. If it doesn't it most likely needs the points cleaned or replaced.

A lot of people think magnetos have to be sent the the rebuild shop when they don't work. 99% of the time They can be fixed at home with just points, condenser, and coil.
