JD 1240 four row planter

Im looking at a 1240 planter and did some internet research which said it is a cumbersome unit designed (or at least marketed) to be used with a 4010/4020. Is this correct? I have a 2010 I wanted to use it with but if the larger tractor is a requirement Ill have to pass.
Thanks
Todd

A 1240 is a newer version of the 494A. Good planter for worked ground. Your 2010 will pull it just fine. I am planting with a 4 row Deere 7200
notill and pulling it with a 2510 gas just fine. A JD B would even pull one. Tom

Thanks. Asking price is $600.00. Unit is functioning and complete but does not have fertilizer hoppers. Comes with corn and bean plates.

25hp can pull a 4 row planter if you are just having fun not breaking speed records.....

Issue becomes hyd lifting ability, some older tractors are low hyd pressure (1500 or so, less with old worn pumps) and dont work with newer planters expecting 2000+
hyd pressure.

I own a P1240 planter( P meaning plate
planter) very good machine in its day.Mine
I can move the wheel mounts so I can plant
30 or 38 inch rows.No gear box to worry
about. With no fertilizer boxes a older
smaller tractor will work.I planted with a
IH H tractor. A well tilled soil bed for
best results.Mine has the optional disc
openers on the seed shoes so it helps. My
main planter is a 7000 john deere.I have
kept my 1240 because they don't bring very
good money around here.

Did they have the option of the corn seed meters or was that a different model that was the forerunner of the 7000 seed metering?

Paul

They made a model 1240 that had a meter system with fingers.Don't remember as I only hade the plate type.Hopefully some one will post with more information.

If it is a plate type planter good choice, but if the plateless style they need to be stored inside always and hard to work on the corn
plateless unit at least if the SS steel band needs replaced

Might be a lil high, but not out of reason. I was at a sale about a month ago and watched a 1250 plateless 6rn with practically perfect fertilizer boxes on it sell for $650. Plateless is much nicer because you can plant whatever seed you can find in it. Plate planters require you to match the seed shape and size to the plates.

Always pulled the 494 - 494A versions with a 49 B JD at 28 HP. Any of the NG tractors would pull it.

I had a 1240 plateless for a few years. Pulled it with an A and B. As others mentioned your 2010 will have no problem with it. The markers weren't the best setup, but it did a great job planting.

They did make them plateless also. The plateless one had the meter down low on the row unit. It was cast aluminum if I remember correctly. I remember reading one problem was they sometimes hit a rock and break that housing.
