JD 1240 Plateless planter

I picked up a nice 1240 planter to do some field corn this year and maybe some soybeans in the future. Any suggestions or tips to help me starting out? I will moldboard and disc the ground. Pulling it with a Super M. Also I will need to get a cylinder to raise and lower it but only have 1 remote on my tractor. Can I make a vent on the other end so i can just let the pressure run back to the resivour? Also I am sticking with this planter so don't tell me I need to get a jd 7000. I don't have an extra 2300 to spend on the 7000. Thanks. Also will be buying a manual but are there different manuals for plate and plateless?

You can use either a single acting cylinder, a dual action (2 way) with a vent plug in place of the second hose.

Ain't nuthin' wrong with a 1240. Don't let anyone tell you there is.

I would think you could put a nipple on the other end of the cylinder then tie a fine rag around it so as to keep the dirt out. That M shouldn't have any trouble handling it. Also if this planter is a plate less, I'd pull the the pots off and make sure all the fingers are loose and working, and check for broken springs.

For the cylinder there is a special vent plug you just screw in instead of the second hose and leave that side of cylinder with no oil in it. And I would say there are probably different books for the plate and plateless. The 1240 plate type is for all practical purposes a 494A unit and that is what I had. the plateless I have not been around but if I was going plateless that is what it would be. I have seen enough of the 7000 series that I would never own one, no not like them one bit. For all marker adjustments you could get that out of the 494-494A book.

Those look like # 80 row units. If they are and if corn was left in them for a few years and they were out side you could have some major corrosion in the finger pick up area.
Thanks
Ken

Had the same planter pulled with farmall m with single way hydraulics. Worked good. Like rustyfarmall said make sure all the fingers open and close correctly and check the steel band in the aluminum housing it should be against the outside. If you or anyone else need parts I have lots of parts for the plateless units. Email is open.

I still use a 1240 plateless. I recommend taking the fingers and seed wheel out and make sure it is all clean of old seed tratment and nothings broke. I little grease on the bushings. The book will show everything. Mine works best with large flat or large round seeds.
