We have a hand start JD H. Its hard to start cranking, towing
it, it fires right off. The magneto has been rebuilt and we have good spark to the plugs.
The 3 way valve has been replaced with a simple shut off so we have good gas flow to the carb.
We haven't done any thing to the carb is there a needle vavle we could open, would that do any good?

There should be an idle screw if that’s what you are asking? Open it a 1/4 turn more (counter clockwise) see if that improves the starting

Make sure it is sealed up with good gaskets another symptom an air leak would be starting when you are pulling it because it’s pulling more air in the leak can’t keep up and the carb will work then. So gasket at manifold to block, gasket at carb to manifold, is the throttle shaft on the carburetor loose to leak air in? Couple things to check

New gaskets if you take them apart silicone will just cause you trouble spend the 2 bucks

I have a 41 H hand start also.
I barely open the throttle on mine.
I do mean barely.
Give it full choke and crank til it fires and open the choke.
Have to play with the choke a bit as I throttle it up.
