hello I have an old 1965 John Deere 2010 ru diesel backhoe that is in need of an engine and as you know I'm sure that the John Deere diesel engine is very expensive to rebuild I was wondering if anybody has done a engine conversion swap using another type of engine maybe a 3 cylinder diesel please advise if anybody has done this as to what could possibly work in this tractor other than the original Thanks

I don't have a problem using a motor adapter plate or trying to build an adapter plate I am just trying to find out what would be the best conversion route on an engine and if anybody has ever done this

(quoted from post at 08:10:23 06/10/15) would the bellhousing from the 4 cylinder baler - combine engine be correct ?

NO. Here's the parts photo of the 3300 combine engine power shaft that attaches to 300 series engines

Thanks for the reply. However my engine is as a stationary engine. It replaced the 2 cylinders when the 30 series
pull combine needed more power. Some have thought this motor is same as 1010 or 2010.

Three cylinder would be too short even if it would bolt up.
Four cylinder would not work in the front either.
45 combine engine I think would be right... but good luck
finding one of those.
Would be cheaper to repair yours unless it needs cylinders.
Those deck plates are nonexistent but .045 OS pistons still
might be had. Bore cylinders still in block.
If you could find another engine it might need work also.

I have sold several gas engines that were put in 2010 diesels. If you go that route you need to find an engine out of a 45 square back combine that has a flat belt cylinder drive. The very last 45 combines used a v belt cylinder drive and that is a 2020 and 2510 engine. I also once heard of a fellow who removed his diesel head and injection pump and installed a gas head, manifold, carb ect and the distributer goes in the same hole as the injection pump.I am not sure if that would work or not. It would be a ton of work adapting but................. a 2-53 from a 440 industrial bolts onto the belhousing. An easy 50 flywheel HP at 1800rpm.

Glen, Lets make it interesting and use a 3-53 Detroit. 90 horses would be even better and the engine would be easier to find. What do you think?

Those were converted gas engines with pre-cups.
Without looking in parts I'm thinking the pistons
were the same.

Why not try a 4 cyl cummins. I have used both 4 &3 cylinder engines and adapted them to several JD's not to mention other breeds. yes there is some adpating to be done, but the fuel savings will pay for itself. Questions? Please call me M-F @ 563 382 4530

I could not bring myself to put that much time and money into a 2010 chassis.
