I"m trying to determine if the John Deere model
2010 is a positive or negative ground system.
An I&T shop manual I looked at recently said
it was positive ground system however the 2010
tractor I recently purchased has a 12 volt
negative ground battery installed in it.
I"m not sure if the system is charging since
it doesn"t have an amp meter and the gen light
has never done anything.

If the battery was installed backwards without re-polarizing the generator. The regulator or the generator could be burned out.

Does it have an alternator? If so it should be negative ground. All john deeres with generators were positive ground.

I would leave it that way, it's a lot safer. No one expects a positive ground when jumping it when the battery is low. Just be sure the hot wire to the coil goes to the pos pole and the wire to the dist goes to the neg.

It was factory positive ground. If it still has the generator on it then it still should be positive ground. As the others have posted someone that did not know put a different battery in it negative ground. They more than likely ruined the voltage regulator and possibly the generator too.

Good luck with that JD 2010. I am JD through and through but you could not give me a JD 2010. Just a money pit waiting to happen. They where junk whan new.

Thanks to all for the responses. It's definitely
a generator so a past owner must have changed
something. I put a voltmeter on the battery
at an idle and then increased to full throttle
and the meter increased a volt or two so I think
it's charging.
