jd 2040 sae/metric?

This is almost a dumb question but I need to work on a jd 2040 this weekend that is out of state. Are there any metric nuts & bolts on this machine or are they all sae (I think that is the right term).

I want to bring the correct wrenches.

Do you happen to know which style it is ? as the later ones may be different ? This might help others better answer. I can't remember for sure what I have encounterd on those as I haven't worked on too many.

If it is like this 318 I'm working on it has some of each. What a pain !

The best guess I would tell you would be to go to jdparts.com and look at the hardware required for the section you are going to be working on. It should be mostly standard though.

Which serial number and where was it built? The later portion of the 40 series utility tractor production was entirely built in Mannheim Germany.

It"s a 1980 model and I have the serial number somewhere but can"t get any other info until I get out there.

I do have manuals and will look at jdparts.

All of them have a mix of both. Be thankful they didn't add Whitworth hardware too.

I have a few old British machines that use it.

Years ago, when Ford Motor Co. was the first to use both metric and SAE in a car - they color-coded the metric stuff blue. I wish they had stuck to that - it helped a little.

Serial number 375594. I bought if off this site about 18 months ago from someone in Plymouth MA (he got it in Kentucky) and was able to get it to NY and it has been in the garage ever since.

I think he said it was a German tractor with a French engine.

90% of the hardware is standard, no matter if it was built in Dubuque or in Germany. For engine work, you shouldn't find any metric hardware, most of it is inside the trans.

I"ve read on the tractor data site that the 2040 is a 3 cylinder but that doesn"t jive.
The 1640,1840 and 2040 were the same tractor with different injection pump settings. And various amounts of standard equipment.
The engines are from Saran France.
Yours is the later 1/2 of production when all utility tractor production was shifted to Germany.

That's a later 2040. It's closer to being a 2350 than a 30 series with new sheet metal styling..
My 1640 while having the new sheet metal design is in the 1st 1/2 of 1640/1840/2040 production.
b.t.w. the chassis return from the batteries to the firewall only works so so at best. After adding a 1/0 cable under the firewall (-) and clamping it under a starter mounting stud/nut. Engine rpms while cranking have increased.

The manual says it has a 3 cylinder; 40hp; 179 cubic inch engine.

JD parts site lists a 1640,1840 & 2040 together in one group and using almost all the same parts??? Wonder how this occurred?
