JD 2240 hydraulic fill

Bought a used JD 2240 (1979) tractor last week and also purchased the operator’s manual on-line from JD. Very disappointed with manual (manual cost me $45.00 including shipping).

I was expecting the manual to give me at least an illustration on where the location was to change the hydraulic oil. It didn’t. All it mentioned was the type of oil I needed and that I should change it after so many hours of use.

Maybe someone out there can tell me where the hydraulic oil cap is and how do I determine when it is at the right level. I assume it’s the cap as shown in the photo, but it does not have a fill level indicator. Plus, what is the plug on the rear for? Any help would be appreciated.

There's some variations of tranny dipstick locations by serial # and transmission type. Here's 2 places to look.

I would suspect oil can be added at either the plug or the cap.

I do have a dipstick on the right side below the seat (see photo JD2240_2). But is the cap as shown in the first photo (JD2240) for hydraulics or is it for transmission oil refill cap?

Transmission and hydraulic oil are together, either cap or plug you chose to use should dump oil into the same chamber.

Looking at your pics your tractor is not a 1979. The late 1977 and newer tractors had a parking brake beside the seat and the hood and gearshifts were different. It is still a good little tractor. I have a 1977 2040 that my Dad bought new. He had three different new 2040's. Tom

Cap in your photo marked "cap" is place JD engineers chose to add hyd oil. Be sure breather in "cap" isn't clogged.

Those JD utility tractors use the same oil and a common reservoir for both the transmission and the hydraulics. The transmission case is the reservoir for what Deere calls the "Transmission-Hydraulic System".

It seems like each brand of vehicles, trucks, tractors and farm equipment lays out their manuals their own way with brand specific names. Anytime I change brands the new manuals seem to be incomplete and poorly organized the first time through, especially if I'm only looking for a one or two specific details. Even the new indexes are useless when I don't know the new brand's nomenclature. Try skimming through the new manual page by page to see how it's organized, and then read it cover to cover.

The plug you have marked is where the adjustment screw would be if you had the parking brake on it.

I will add that the trans/hyd oil should be checked with the engine idling on that era utility tractors.

I'll double check on the serial number on the tractor to be sure.

Maybe that's my problem. I checked the oil level, thanks to this forums help, and it appears full. However, when running a bush hog I noticed that sometimes my hitch would drop and I'd have to rev the engine up to lift the hitch back up again. In addition, I would lose power steering for a short period of time.
