JD 2440 stuck in low range

Can't move range selection to neutral, high or park. The gear shift will move ok and goes into five but can't get range shifter into park.

The tractor will move in low range.

Of course, not being in park the engine won't start now either.

Any ideas?

Probably broke off metal slot spot welded to end of shift rail that has a slot for gearshift. Remove trans shifter cover and look at it.

Very common problem. It has a broken shifter rail. Unfortunately you have to split it to fix it. As Tx Jim says pull the shift cover and take a look.

They are not welded,, they'er riveted, more weak engeneering ....

My mistake on welding but it's been 30 yrs since I've seen one. But I'll bet that the metal tab on shift rail is broken and can be welded.

I have seen some where preveius repairs went down trough the top cover hole and welded them back on. These tractors do have a lot of bad ideas built into them, all the way thru.I think a freshman VO AG class could have done a better job desighning them.....

I couldn't agree with you any more. The people that run JD utilities that have never diagnosed/repaired them will never understand and want to argue.

IMHO hydraulic design is daylight & dark between JD rowcrop & utility tractors.
