JD 2440 won't shut off

My 2440 won't shut off by pulling the injector pump shut off leaver. I opened the top of the injector pump and found the shut off cam (J shaped clip) laying in the pump. I can't seem to put it back on. It's supposed to snap back in place but doesn't snap in. It doesn't look bent and it's not broken. What could be wrong?

NOT sure why it would snap out of place, but I've heard of that before.

To put back, it must be oriented correctly, there's a partial slot in the shaft where the flat part of the "J" must fit against the flat area in the slot.

Once it's properly lined up it takes a pretty good push to snap it into place.

DISCLAIMER: A mistake in that area of the injection pump could cause uncontrolled overspeeding and not being able to shut it down! Proceed at your own risk! Consider having a little board or HEAVY rag that could be used to choke off the air supply should it "run away", and have a plan in advance as to how to do that.
