I have a JD 2640 with a 3 button clucth, no HI-LO and independent (hydraulic shift) PTO. Flywheel, clutch disk, and pressure plate appear to be in good shape. The linkage free travel is adjusted per service manual. At full pedal travel and idle there is some grind to shift into gear. At PTO speed a gear change has to be done quick or I will have to idle motor to be able to shift without excessive grinding. The warmer the transmission oil the worse the issue. Seems like the clutch needs 1" more pedal travel to fully release. No idea how old the clutch is, how many hours is on it or how it was treated.
Internal wear in the pressure plate, set for nearly no throw out clearance, operator error, or common issue with utility series.
