JD 2640 hydraulics

I have a JD 2640 with hydraulics (bucket, 3-pt, and remote ) that really labor and rattle most of the time. Sometimes it works fine. We've changed the filter, cleaned screen and some other o rings. The mechanic seems to think the transmission pump in back has a cracked or broken intake line and suggested over filling with fluid to keep the level high for the pump to draw. Does this seem reasonable?

Overfilling that much is not a good idea. Testing with pressure gauges will tell what is going on. Could be any of several things or a combination of more than one.

some time back a 2640 came into my shop with pto slipping and hyd problem sounder like yours work good loader up then go to doing shakes. so while i was into pto pump checked all the pipes and transmission pump nothing showed any leakage had one cracked pipe so though that problem the problem,. put i all back together put loader on same problem. at the same time i had one other 2640 in shop was changing out the supply and return line for main pump and it just jump out at me the first 2640 some one before me had switched the supply and return oil lines switch then back solved hyd problem. you might check that the supply line goes into main pump on side then exit top of main pump into reservoir tank then oil cooler then back in to transmission housing one way to check flow is disconnect main pump drive disconnect rubber line 5 gallon bucket start tractor check flow i thinking it should be around 9 gallon per minute ate high idle 1900rpm

Thanks for your words of caution. I agree, I don't know why he can't pin point it with pressure gauges. One thing he did do was put the tractor on a side off a hill and it worked fine tipped one way, not the other. ???

Were you referring to the lines(parts key 4 & 38) on the 2640 that were in reverse locations??

Have you or your mechanic checked in hyd filler hole for spraying oil with 3pt raised and engine running?? What type of loader control, SCV or ind valve?? If ind valve has anyone checked to be sure no oil is flowing out return hose with both valve levers in neutral??

I have a 2440 that did the same thing with a loader . I fill the hydraulic to the full line with the loader all the way up & the bucket all the way down . if this does"t work try changing the filter again. it worked on mine good luck:)

This actually worked! It does look like the intake line is cracked or broke off. Filling it a bit over has made the problem go away.
