JD 265, how does parking brake work?

I've had this JD 265 for close to 20 years. It's been a fantastic little tractor. Recently, my Tree Climber retired, and moved out of area. He was going to leave his JD X540 with snow blower, leaf vack, and some other stuff with the house. It has been garage kept since new, and they had it serviced spring and fall every year, at the local JD dealer. I told him it was a low ball offer, but it was all I had, I'd give him $2500 for everything. He let me have it.

So, I took the 265 to my farm in WV for lawn duty. The boys were up for a shooting weekend, and mowed the grass for me while there. One said he went to put the brake on when he parked it and it went to the floor. I just pulled the wheels and no brakes on the axles. How does the brake work? How do I adjust it, or replace it? It goes dead to the floor pan and sticks there. You have to pull it up with your toe.

There's a little drum brake on the transaxle itself, with LOTS of mechanism between the peddle and the brake. Perhaps something came apart/disconnected?

For more details (parts breakdowns) of the parts involved you can go to the official DEERE parts lookup site linked below and enter your model number. I believe you'll need serial number, as well.

OK, the picture helped. This is a hydro, so there is no brake on it. When you have the trans engaged and step on the brake, you feel resistance as the levers push the hydro lever back to neutral. Does it in forward and reverse. Then the brake lock is just a detente that locks the trans in neutral. I shot it down with White Lithium Grease and now it's functioning and feels right. Thanks, Joe.

Wore out, thanks again. I got my JD buddy, I bought the tractor from, 20 years ago. He said it's internal so I can't see it. He said it's almost never heard of them failing, it's probably a linkage problem. He said push come to shove, just disconnect the brake linkage. I never use the brake anyway being a hydro. I'm going to see what I'm looking at cost wise. I've got two of my commercial mowers in the shop now, and this is my number 3 back up, Joe.
