jd 2840 leak

Hi I have a jd 2840 that is leaking hydraulic oil into the starter. I am 99% sure that I need to pull the tractor apart and change the seal between the housings. I am just looking for a few suggestions and/or tips to make the job a bit more manageable. I have a cement garage and blocks for the front end, but am a little nervous about the rear and the act of pulling it apart. I grew up with IH and have taken them apart several times, but usually with a forklift, which is not currently available. Any tips/advice would be great, thanks in advance.

Your 2840 has a dry clutch,,so your rear engine seal could be leaking, is the oil dark, or black like the engine oil ? If it's lighter in color it would be a trans. shaft leak,,ether way you will need to split it.

I may have to add some more bad news... Unless you are sure the oil is engine oil, you are going to have to split the tractor again between the clutch housing and the transmission case. {kinda like a TA in a ol' IH

If I remember correctly, the oil seal for the Hi-Lo is only accessible after removing the Hi-Lo out the back of the clutch housing. A common reason for the seal to fail is a bushing failure. This bushing is {supposed to be} a press fit in the clutch housing and supports the Hi-Lo assembly. The bushing can fail from a plugged orifice that restricts the oil that lubes the bushing.

More than a couple 2840s around here have this bushing J-B Weld-ed into the clutch housing because it spun in the original bore.

An oily clutch housing on a 2840 is not a good sign.
