JD 2840 Leaking

If I start the tractor it runs great but starts to leak hydraulic fluid out of the weep hole in bottom of bellhousing.

When I shut the tractor off, it leaks about 1/4" cut up hydraulic fluid, not motor oil. What can this be? Input shaft to transmission? Anything else in that vecinity?

I have a repair manual, shop labor manual (to give me R&R times etc), but nothing shows me whats in the bellhousing area.

I think there were a couple of serial number breaks on your tractor, plus a couple of powertrain options, hi/low shift or power reverser and maybe others.

Without having a Technical Manual you can go to https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/ armed with your serial number and knowledge of what options it has and see a parts breakdown of the clutch housing and transmission input seals and other parts.

You can order a Tech Manual on the https://techpubs.deere.com/en-US/Search/Equipment website.

No hyd reverser was offered on 2840 only had hyd hi-lo. My guess is trans input shaft &/or hyd hi-lo is leaking oil into clutch housing. I remember one of the 2840's I sold new the hyd pto clutch came apart & ruined the trans case. I had to wait several months for a new transmission case.

If you are leaking transmission / hydraulic oil from the clutch housing the leak most likely is
product of one of two seals. The live / PTO drive shaft can seal AR82795 or the transmission input
shaft seal R34650. Both seals will require a transmission from clutch housing split. The
transmission seal requires the two speed to be removed from live drive shaft can. Pretty common job
on these tractors. DW
