JD 2950/55 Thoughts

I know the 2950/55 are utility tractors, not row crop tractors. Does anybody know if they will pull a 12 or 14 foot disk and a 6 or 8 row planter in clay soil? I think the tractor will do this on a Hobby Farm. Several people bought them to replace worn out 4020's and were disappointed, but it is a lighter tractor. You can buy these tractors reasonable right now. I know you could put $5-10k into one and never get it back but many things are this way. You have to plan on keeping the tractor.
Thanks,

An 8 row will be a stretch. It would probably do a 6 easy. I pulled an 8 row plate planter I believe a 1240 with a 2555. It was a pain in the rear as wide as it was. It had no openers but was following a field cultivator and planter filling in a couple gaps. It was alot for it and for an 8 row planter it was about as light as it gets.

Borderline power and traction for a 2955 in clay for 12-14 foot disc. It will probably work with good tires and ballast and you don't go too fast.

I have a 2940 and a John Deere 210 disc, 9 inch space, 36 blade, 12 to 13 feet across the front. If you ran the disc on no till ground, had no problems in 5th gear, In plowed tobacco ground it took everything the tractor had dropped to a lower gear and had to lift the disc sinks down to the axles. Tractor had 600lbs on the front and loaded rears.

What is your budget? I generally like the 295X tractors but many hours of heavy tillage are not their thing. They are an economy tractor in the 80-90 HP range with a design intended for a minimum of heavy drawbar pull.
