JD 3 bottom mounted plow question

I have a 3-16 semi-mounted plow, dont know the number, I think it is the same style as a 145(?). I tried it out last year but couldnt get it to go much deeper than about 4 to 5 inches. Am I missing something? Thank you.

Plowing with a mounted plow is like making love to an opera singer - everything has to be right for the result to be good.

If the ground is dry and hard, and the shares are worn you will not be able to get deep penetration.

Usually plow penetration problems are due to worn shares. Take a good look at your shares. I'm betting that you will find them very worn.

Your local Deere dealer should be able to help you with new ones for a fairly reasonable price. To help most modern parts men that dont sell plow parts often you may want to get the number off the back of your shares to match up new ones. The parts catalog "plow bottoms" is very difficult for the novice to use with any accuracy.

Another thing that prevents plow penetration is coulters running too deep. They need not to run more than two inches into the ground. Their purpose is to cut sod only.

It may also be that the rear of your plow is too deep. Try letting your rockshaft down then easing the remote cylinder down. That should allow your plow points to penetrate. If your plow runs with the points in the air it cant penetrate. On the reverse side neither can it run on its nose or it will do a bad job as well as drafting terribly hard. Your plow beam should be flat front to rear and side to side when running through the ground.
