Jd 3 bottom trip plow?

Hi everyone got a chance to purchase this 3 bottom
trip plow with clouters. Looks to be complete and in
nice shape plow points are good also just needs
tires! Are these rare plows haven't seen many 3
bottom plow trip style. Before. What is a fair price
for this and do they work well? Thanks john.

I would not to too concerned with new tires as long as you can get them to hold air. Front crossbar of the hitch might be sprung ? I do not know if they had that curve in them ?
As long as it is not sprung and can be adjusted to plow right that would be great for a plow days as you can hook anything to them.

The rope trip plows are more popular now than in many years because you can pull them with any tractor without hydraulics or with. That plow in good shape should be worth at least $500. The most sought after of the trip plows are the one bottom style as they can be pulled by many of the smaller tractors and there does not seem that many survived the junk gremlins.

Like someone said, the JD 55 plows are quite common. I also have one with the hydraulic lift. But I think the wheel lift version is not that common. My guess is that maybe only about 10% had the wheel lift. Nice if you want to pull it with a tractor that doesn't have hydraulics. Can't tell for sure but it looks like your plow was converted to the newer throw away shares.

Plow looks to be a find; An 55ab clutch lift;. Plow as some choice features & pretty much complete ; Coulter mounted jointers are unique & rare,.. Three piece HS bottoms are a improvement over original 2 piece bottoms it would have came with.. I see it has plain hitch ,not a spring cushion or trip release hitch ;; So stay out of rocky fields.. Ha Ha !!

Looks like a frog killer got it! Maybe that"s what put the "ouch" on that hitch crossbar?

I have his slightly newer cousin (555H) with hydraulic lift and resettable bottoms. It works very nicely. My brother used a 44 hydraulic lift plow with an A and the first time he used the 3 bottom & the 70D he decided he no longer needed to plow badly enough to ever go back to the 44! He would use this plow and the 70 or not plow.

ooks like a single bottom in the 2 nd / 3 rd picture between the levers. I have a JD, single bottom, 2 way plow on steel with clutch lift that needs to be repainted. Just to many irons in the fire to get to it..LOL.

Uhh, That's NOT a trip bottom plow..... That's just a plain old clutch lift truss frame plow. There should be a spring release hitch on it so it disconnects from the tractor when it hit an immovable object. It looks like it didn't have the trip mechanism on the hitch, which is why the crossbar is bent.

I gotta say I don't see what you guys are seeing in this plow...?

I think the original poster is not aware of the difference between a trip bottom plow and a wheel lift plow that uses a trip rope. The only rarity of this plow is that it is 55 plow with the wheel lift. Not that many made with wheel lift. The original pictures don't show the end of the hitch so can't tell if it had some kind hitch trip mechanism. I had a 44 that had that mechanism that dropped into a special clevis on the tractor draw bar. Al

Well, in his defense, he didn't say "trip bottom plow" he said "trip plow" and "trip style" which is some,s terminology for anything with a trip rope to operate. Needs a cleated tire on the land (clutch ) side to ever lift it properly . Lot of nice features on it and not much work to make it operable. Perfect for anyone with a " D " JD . Not big money but would sell good.
