JD 30 combine

I have a decent JD 30 that I've used for several years on oats and rye. Every year I have to wait to get my ten acres of soybeans combined by a neighbor. Could I do my soybeans with this machine? With the price of beans I don't want to loose too many. I have them in 30 inch rows and they're clean of weeks right now. Years ago no one raised beans here in Michigan so no one knows much about using a 30 on them.

Soybeans? Yes! How Well? That pretty much depends on Your knowledge of the Machine, & how to set it based on all the conditions. Crop, weather, terrain, etc.

Should work well. I combined a lot of beans with pull type canvas feed machines with few problems. The auger feed pull types like your JD 30 and the IH 80 and 82 were much better.

Biggest problem with the small pull type Combines were weeds! That was before Roundup Ready Soybeans. Now weeds are rarely a problem. Only thing yield is higher now so adjust and go slow if needed to keep from throwing beans out back instead of putting them in grain tank. You can also regulate flow of beans into machine by how many rows you cut per swath. You should be able to cut three 30" rows per swath but if that seems too much material going thru to separate swing over and take two rows.

Like Scotty said, settings are critical.Read book, and check often when first starting so you don't crack beans, shell them all out, and put beans in tank instead of on ground. Also with good yield prepare to unload the small grain tank often.

Good luck, Bill

A 30 combine will eat weeds better than a lot of newer machines. The cylinder is nearly as wide as the platform. Fear not on the weeds, just use common sense. Your 30 will do a wonderful job on beans if set correctly. Mike

Mike is right. Used a 30 for several years in beans and they would handle weeds much better than a 45 would. Not so a 25 though as it used a canvass rather than an auger feed. Joe
