JD 3010 reinstalling engine.

We are trying to stab our rebuilt 3010 engine back into the tractor and frankly it is not going.

Is there a trick? Does the pto lever need to be engaged or not?

I know I am missing something, just can't figure out what.
 
Spin pto shaft on the rear I use a shaft off an old implement as installing it will usually pop slightly and then it will go. have a refreshment and try again in 20 minutes.

Usually lever back no reason to smack the levers both clutches operate by being pushing in the forward direction don’t have to slip over a throw out bearing or anything crazy

We have been doing that a couple hours and it still has not popped into place.
 
The pto clutch disk floats in the pressure plate. When you pull the alignment tool out it will drop down. You should be able to push it back up from underneath. Double check alignment of traction disk.
 
I usually rotate flywheel by opening the timing cover on the rh side and using a prybar.
If you are far enough away the bolts have no chance of starting its not through the transmission clutch rotate flywheel
If you are 4 to 2 inches away it’s pto clutch rotate pto slightly to hit a spline

If you are 1 inch to 3/4 away when it hangs up pilot bearing and the pto shaft is what goes into it so again rotate pto (for sure pto clutch lever back at this point) but it’s possible it will have to be spun 3/4 of the way around or so to align at the right angle with the ever slightest amount of pressure at that point you aren’t trying to hit a spline it’s just shaft angle isn’t quite right it’s best to have someone pushing on it while rotating and it will pop in at that point. This is the point I used to struggle and try all kinds of things and would spend a lot of time rotating engine sometimes it would go after much frustration. sometimes not the slight shaft angle from it hanging down or not being quite aligned won’t change till you spin the pto

Like tx Jim said no tightening bolts finger tight only using them to align

I don’t usually put them in gear but my engine stand side has wheels so I can roll it halfway across the shop if a semi comes in or whatever unlike what they show in the book so I usually consider the rear end parked for the duration of the process if you have rigid stands up front I think I’d still try pretty hard to align turning flywheel and keep trans in park but that’s just me

IMHO guide 2 bolts with heads removed is a better option than installing bolts with heads. I forgot to mention also rotate rear pto shaft to help align pto clutch splines
I think Tim s had some pictures of studs he made with a groove in them for a screwdriver to turn them back out. the op can search for “4020 clutch install issues” I believe if that is something he wants to pursue it’s not a bad plan
 
Well we all feel very stupid. Had the Expletive Deleted, Clutch disk turned the wrong Expletive Deleted way.

Thank Y'all for the suggestions. We shall endeavor to try to work on the tractor in a less retarded way next time.
 
With guide bolts in place and bellcrank started on guide bolts measure the gap between engine block and bellcrank in three places: top, left side and right side near near guide bolts. They should be the same, not close enough or a little off, but exactly the same distance. then do your shaft turning and flywheel turning until it slides together. DO NOT FORCE it together with bolts !!! Take your time, think it through.
