JD 301A Looking for a loader

I just bought a JD 301A I am looking to buy a loader. There is a JD 47 for sale in my area for 1000$ the seller says it came of a 2020. Would this loader work? Is it worth buying then trying to track down the right brackets?

Price sounds cheap enough & yes it will fit a 301A. Model 47 is lighter duty than some other JD FEL models. Mounting brackets for 2020 will fit 301A but will require being shorter in length

The 301A is a 3-cylinder, like the 1020, the 2020 is 4-cylinder. The parts catalog for the 1020 (3 cylinder) uses different rear brackets than the 2020. Wouldn't he need the brackets for a 1020 to install on his 301A. It looks like they move the loader connection rearward a bit. It is likely the 1020 rear brackets could be reworked to make the offset.

I should have viewed 47 parts catalog before replying. Yes it appears you're correct in that rear mounting brackets will require shortening to mount loader that was on a tractor with 4 cylinder on a shorter length tractor with a 3 cyl engine.

We have 47 loader on our 2020 and we have 301A with what appears to be a 148 loader on it. Comparing the 148/145 mounting of the 301A to the same loaders on the 2030s here, the 301A uses shorter mounts. The 47 mast has braces welded to it that attach to front mounts. not a non-braced mast like the 148/145 loaders have. This is why I think the front brace mounts for the 47 will go in the same location as they are on the 2020 and the mast pockets for a 1020 are offset to the rear to fit the mast, with the braces, as the flywheel housing bolts are the connection point for both rear mounts. The mast braces would require major rework to shorten the them if the rear mounts are not moved to the rear, if I am seeing this correctly.

I also believe the side frames (between the tractor front support and flywheel housing will be needed for the 301A. I may have missed them but I only found a right hand side frame called out for a side mount mower, in the 301A catalog. That right hand frame has the same part number as the 1020 RH frame. I believe the one for the left side 1020 will fit the 301A as well and both will be needed before the loader mounts are installed, to lessen the chance of the loader breaking the tractor in two.

Ok still digesting all this. I very new to this. What I’m understanding is that this would be a lot of work and it might be best to wait and find a 145/148? That fit without any work?

I think you mean 146, not a 148.

Basically there's not a lot of differences between a 1020 & 301A except color of the paint. 301A & 1020 shared same part # for frt hyd pumps. 1020 were built '65-'73 while 301A were built '74-'85. 301A could have a heavier non-adjustable front axle than a 1020 & that HD axle wasn't offered on a 1020.

I agree with Tx Jim, there is little difference between a 301A and 1020.

How much work it will be depends some on your skills and tooling. Do you have fabrication skills and tools? (Layout, cutting, grinding, welding, drilling up to 3/4" holes in reasonably heavy steel, like 3/8 to 5/8" thick). Or do you have a good fab shop you use?

The mounting brackets are more the key, than the loader model, in what will fit. To use the 47 loader, it looks like the rear mounts would need to be from a 1020 or 301, 301A (basically one of the three-cylinder models of that style). Like the 47 loader, to use a 145, 146, or 148 loader you will need the mounts that fit a 3-cylinder tractor of the same style as your 301A. Or the 4-cylinder rear mounts need to be reworked properly as they take most of the force.

In most cases I believe you need to add the side frames I mentioned for the loaders being discussed. Some of the newer loaders, like a 175 on a 2040, incorporate the addition reinforcement into the loader mounts, so there were no separate side frames under the loader mounts. Again, you need the 3-cylinder mounts to match the mounting hole locations on the tractor, or the 4-clinder mounts need to be shortened to match the mounting holes on the tractor. I have lengthened a set of 3-cylinder mounts for a 175 to move the loader to a 4-cylinder tractor. It would take a bit more checking, but I think a 175 loader from like a 3-cylinder 2040 would be a bolt on fit on your 301A.

Rather than look for a specific model loader, look for what tractor the loader came off of. As others have said, the only way it will be bolt on is if it came off a 1020 or a 301/301A, regardless of what model the loader is.

Normally it is easier to find a tractor with a loader already installed, and just about impossible to buy an old tractor, then find a loader that will bolt on with no modifications. Loaders tend to get put on a tractor and left there.
