JD 3020D 24v problem

ON JD 3020D the gen light came on dim while engine running. Does not mater at what engine speed. When engine is stopped light is bright, but when key is turned off light still stays on bright.
I had to take off a battery cable on the right hand battery for light to go off. Any ideas as to what is the problem..

Start looking for a bare wire or one thats cover is wearing thin.

It could be a generator or regulator problem. Do you have the tech manual with the electrical schmatic? Remove wires one by one from the regulator and generator and see if the gen light turns off when the key is off.

I agree with JD Dave but would begin my diagnosis at voltage regulator. Do you understand JD 24 volt generator & voltage regulator have no factory frame ground connections?

A little more information to add to the mix- problem is this is based on memory! Many years ago I updated the wiring on my 4020. The kit included a little pigtail fused "ground" wire which was installed between the batteries and a frame ground. In other words- from either end of the cable which runs between the batteries, to a frame ground. Directions specified which end, but I chose the other out of convenience. I do remember that got someone on here all twisted up! This held a 20 amp slow blow fuse. During the remainder of the years I had that tractor, I think it might have blown a couple of times. I can't remember the symptoms. And I can't remember what preceded that connection either!
