JD 310A Backhoe Tire Sizes

Hi all,

I have an old John Deere 310A backhoe that's going to be needing tires soon. The manual calls for either 16.9-24 or 19.5L-24 tires. The guy I bought it from had 18.4 x 24's on it which is what I will be replacing. I realize the L stands for "low profile" but other than that I haven't found a lot of other information. The diameter is almost the same between the 16.9 and the 19.5L it just appears that the tread width is greater on the 19.5L's. One guy did mention that the 19.5L's sit "flatter" than the 16.9's which are more rounded. If that's true, the roundness is something I want to avoid as my current 18.4's are worn completely in the middle but the side treads are still almost whole. Any advice? Thanks!

How wide are the wheels? Sounds like the 18.4's may be too wide for the wheels you have. I may go 1 size wider than stock but sometimes stock is too wide for the original wheels. I have seen 18.4's on 14" wide wheels, 15" is better but should be 16" wide. The 16.9 is the new sizing, 15" was the old size. 19L needs 16" wide rim....James

The parts catalog shows more tire options and the recommended wheel sizes. 18.4 x 24 is one of the options. The 310A parts catalog shows 496 mm (19-1/2") wide wheels for 19.5 tires, 429 mm (16-7/8') wide wheels for 16.9 tires, 467 mm (18-3/8") wide wheels for 18.4 tires and 533 mm (21") wide wheels for 21 tires.

How wide are your rims?

Wheels are 18 inches wide
Are you measuring just the bead area inside the flanges? Your measurement is wide for the 16.9 tire rims and narrow for the 18.4 tire rims.

18" could be a little big but it's definitely somewhere in that realm it was hard to get a real accurate measurement inside with the tires still on and climbing underneath. I would safely estimate 17" but after measuring I feel like 16" is definitely too small.

The 16-7/8" for the 16.9 tires would sound close by your current description of estimating 17".
