JD 4000

Next week I'm going to look at a JD 4000, 1972, with a little over 5000 hours on it. It's been well maintained, good paint, new tires all around. Starter weights and 5 flat weights up front. 2 remotes.
What things should I be looking for when checking out this tractor. I know two cylinders but not the new generation tractors. I will be taking along my pressure gauge and hose adapter to check the hydraulics to see if they leak down. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a nice tractor.I'm no expert but I have owned a 4000 for thirty years.If you think the hours and price is right just buy it.You can tell a lot by pedal wear and 3 point arm slop.A 4000 is becoming quite collectable.Handy tractor and easy on fuel.Good luck.

The 1972 models are the most collectable and bring a premium.I assume it is a syngro and prefer diff lock and no pre cleaner.Original paint is a plus and 5000 hours is very low.Sounds like you know the history but we all know tachs can be replaced but wear points cant.The clutch free travel adjustment will tell you something and if it starts and drives fine you should try to buy it.I have had many that I have bought and sold and most are from $11K to $15K+ for about the nicest ones.New tires [preferably Firestones] add about $2000 to the deal.Slab weights and starters are bringing around $60+.Hopefully no cab as single headlight JD fenders are hard to find. Just did a quick search on Craig's list for one. Found it - $11k. Has loader and canopy. 1972 with overhaul.
