I am helping a neighbor work on her late-husbands 4010. The tractor has 2 6 volt batteries and they need charging. Can anyone tell me how to hook up a charger? I have never worked on anything with 2 batteries and I don't want to damage anything. Also how to hook up jumper cables to jump start it from another tractor? Thanks for all help.

Are you 100% positive batteries are 6 volt because 4010 came from factory with two 12 volt batteries IE 24 volt system.

If the batteries are 6 volt attach charger + lead to top post on starter solenoid and - charger lead to tractor frame.

As jim said, we first need to do a little research... are you sure they are 2 6 volt batteries??? If you are able to post a picture here of the batteries, and perhaps the generator/alternator, we could help you a little more. Keep in mind there are a number of setups this thing could have, and to get you off on the right foot, we could use a little more help.

A last question... this thing is diesel? Or is it gas? 2 6 volt batteries does not fit the factory configuration of either, but could be either.

Look at the batteries. Count the cells. Each cell is 2 volts. Three cells,,,6 volt. 6 cells 12 volt. Each cell will have the cap you pull off to add water (on old batteries .) Newer ones look the same you just cant pull the lid or cap off.

Tractor is diesel. She told me that the batteries were 6 volt. I have not opened the battery boxes myself, but will do so tomorrow. If the tractor came from the factory with 2 12 volt batteries, then I am pretty sure that it is still that way. I can't imagine that someone would go through the trouble to convert it to 6 volt. Thanks for your help.

Some JD tractors such as 4010/4020 that came from factory with 24 volt elect systems have be changed to 12 volt systems. If I owned a tractor with a 24 volt system the very 1st time it gave me an electrical problem it would get changed to 12 volts.
