Jd 4020 crankshaft

Question. On a jd 4020 to replace the
crankshaft, do you have to split the
tractor, or is there another way ?

Why do you need to replace the crankshaft? Is it broken in some way. Or is it just worn? Either way, you have to split the tractor at the clutch housing, remove the flywheel, rear seal, everything up front and all connecting rod and main bearing caps. The technical manual will give you thorough directions.

pull the engine, get it on a stand upside down. then do your work. you saying u can lift the crank with one hand put it in place then get the main caps on with the other hand? be a first for me.

Number 1 biggest hurdle you face to do it without splitting is the flywheel. Look at the diagram in the link. The flywheel is to the left. Bolts go through it into the back of the crankshaft. They are behind where the clutch plate sets and the clutch plate sets on a splined shaft out of the front of the transmission. Without sliding the tractor apart to disengage those splines to remove the clutch there is no way to take the flywheel off. Without the flywheel off you do not have to look at the tractor very long to figure out there is no place for that flywheel to drop out. Also as wore out stated in a manner of speaking the crank is heavy. If it could be done you would have the bearings all banged up before you got it in there. If you are going to do this split you better at least get an IT manual for some guidance, for beginners an actual Deere manual would be better.

the split is the easy part, its as i said getting the engine on a stand or bench to work on it. its not just back yard stuff. shop cement floor and clean clean work area. u can roll brgs in from the bottom buy i have yet to see someone replace a crank from the bottom. and if they told me they would do that on my tractor i would tell them they are b. s ing and do it my self. i have replaced clutches on the 4020 in case u are wondering. where is this wore out post? and also i have yet to see a crank get replaced with the pistons still in the block. yes it can be done but there is a reason that the crank is coming out. either lack of oil or just worn out and rods knocking. really wondering why u are concerned about the crank? or is it just a question?
