JD 4020 Front Hydraulic Coupler Remove and Replace

I was baling today and noticed some noise coming from the front end. Got off and saw my coupler hardware came loose and is wearing through my pulley. Do I have to pull the pump to get this coupler off? Is that pulley pressed on? If you can let me know that would be great.

Thanks

shouldn't have to pull anything. coupler splits in half with removal of bolts. Unless holes in pulley are worn out so you can thread bolts back in that hold that side of coupler should just be able to replace them and reattach coupler.

I don't envy you.

As the other poster said, remove the two bolts holding the aluminum coupler halves together and get that out of the way.

If damper pulley is, in fact ruined, it's held in place with a bolt into the crankshaft "snout". Once you get that bolt out, the pulley can be pulled of with an appropriate "gear puller". HOPEFULLY, there's some threads left deep in the damaged hole to attach a bolt through the puller to.

Once you get the damper off, the seal should be replaced, you have to take the stamped steel timing gear cover off to do that.

The new damper/pulley will need to be shoved in place with a "damper installer tool" or appropriate piece of 'all thread: and a nut and a heavy washer or two.

You may have to remove the two coupling drive bolts from the pump drive and/or loosen the drive coupling bolts where it's slotted and shove it as far forward as you can to get enough clearance to do all that.

When done, install the "hydraulic pump drive screws" using Loctite and torque them (probably 35 to 40 foot pounds).

It looks like you have a broken lug to add to your misery,,that hole is needed to pull the dampener,,you cant pull it any other way, if you try to pull from the outer edge it will just pull the outer half off the center,,a new dampener is most likely going to be needed..

Ouch. I just did one on our 4020. On ours
it was just the aluminum coupler that had
stripped out so it was an easy fix. Yours
is at a funny angle and looks like
something else went bad too but I can't
tell exactly what from this picture. Take
off the aluminum coupler and see if you
find other damage.

I broke the ears off my damper one time luckily i
had rebuilt the engine about 15 years before and I
just pulled the big center bolt out and the damper
came off pretty easy so you might get lucky

Well, lots of good advice here. If it starts getting tough, before to much cussing has occurred, just pull the radiator. That should be a big help to get at it.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Got my parts in on friday and tackled it yesterday. Had to modify one of my pullers a bit to get the dampener off but all in all it
went really well. She's back up and running again.

Thanks again to all.
