Need to remove injector pump on John Deere 4020 for repair. Would it be best to rotate engine to top dead center before removing to facilitate anccurate alignment when pump is reinserted? Thanks

Definitely
While it certainly can't hurt to set the engine to #1 tdc, it really isn't necessary, as the pump is driven by an offset tang and can only be installed one way.

Scribe the mounting flange and "pad" on the block, then, after installation rotate the engine to the appropriate timing mark and verify that the timing marks in the pump timing window match, or reset it accordingly.

Turning the engine over to the flywheel timing mark before checking that the pump timing marks match takes up any slack in the timing gears, oilpump drive gears and drive slot and tang for an accurate "reading" of the pump timing marks.

Remove the two screw cover plate over the flywheel and use a big screwdriver on the flywheel teeth, then turn it until the PUMP marks align, as pump turns 1/2 engine speed. DO NOT count on the pump offset drive tang method of removing/installing the pump, as I have seen them STILL installed wrong and wrecked when the nuts are used to PULL it into place, seizing the head and breaking the drive shaft.

Ok, thank you very much for the advice.
