JD 4020 rear axles??

There were two sizes of rear axles used on the JD 4020's. Can anyone tell me the year and serial number when the 3 1/8" axle was replaced with the 3 3/8" axle?? Thanks!!

Greg, all of the 4020's had 3 3/8" axles. However, the 4000 tractors (which are also listed in the late 4020 parts book) have 3 1/8" axles. Mike

Your question reminds me of when I first went to work for a JD dealer in the 60's. When I first worked in parts dept I ordered the "wrong parts" for a customer. My boss took me to the side and explained that the reason I ordered the wrong parts is because I didn't read the "FOOT NOTES". I never forgot to read the foot notes(remarks) after that lecture. Here's an example (look for the "(A)") which designates 4000 model only.

All 4020/4320/most4430s were 3/3/8.I believe the very last of the 4430s/all 4440/4450/4455/4630 had 3/5/8.The 4010s and 4000s were 3/1/8.

4440 tractors had 2 size the 1st year they ere smaller . so the 4430 would have had the smaller axle also We have 2 4440s and the have different axles we broke lots of hubs and 2 wheels the 1st year in the mud with the smaller axles and we weren't the only ones. most of the time it did happen in the mud.

The 1st 4440 had 86mm axle and the later had 92mm axles

Actually the 4430's did have different axle diameters although I don't ever remember seeing a 4430 with them. This info came out of 4430 parts catalog. look at these 2 part #s (R64521 & R64522) below and the remarks(footnotes).
