JD 4040S Internal Hydraulic Lines?

I am looking to buy a John Deere 4040 S and before I do, I want to make sure that this model Tractor does not have the internal hydraulic lines like the Manheim made 2955 - 3255 series. What I have read so far on this site, is that they are mostly an American made 4050 Tractor shipped over in Parts to avoid European tariff As a new model. Any information is much appreciated as I do not want to spend the money on a 4050 model and I would like to have the 359 engine. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

JD rowcrop tractors such as 4040S do not share the same/similar internal hyd line/tubes as the JD 20-55 series utility tractors. They can share a similar front hyd pump & are closed-center hyd system but that's about as close as the 2 hyd systems get. 4040S is different from 4055 as no 15 speed powershift transmission was offered on a 4040S. Not all 4050 had 5.9L engines some had 7.6L engines

Thank you very much, that is exactly the answer I was hoping for though my previous research on this site. From what I’ve read, I believe the 1986 4050 serial #6509 and after have the 359 engine and parts are available if needed. The reason for wanting this particular model is that it does have MFWD not HFWD and a lot less purchase price.

You're welcome. All JD 50 & 55 series rowcrop tractors could have option of MFWD.
After many discussions with a couple of friends I know I have decided against the 4040S because of some parts availability. I’m 72 and didn’t want to spend 35-40K but have decided on a 4050 MFWD. I don’t put over 50-60 hours annually on it, but really need it in the winter and spring for feeding cows and cleaning snow drifts from my driveway. I’m going to buy something within a year. Here’s the question I plug my tractor in at least 2 hours before starting when temperature is under 40 degrees and would appreciate your opinion, if I can find a later model with the 359 would it be as good or better than the 466 engine? Also 15 speed PS or QR?

Well, I found a John Deere 4050 power shift with the 466 engine. 8600 hours supposedly overhauled 1100 hundred hours ago by John Deere dealer. no paperwork. He just called me back and said he found out that it was 2600 hours ago. I don’t know anything about that 15 speed power shift transmission, but I’m going to the sale. It’s at Joel‘s tractors in Straw berry point Iowa (380 miles from me) is there anything I can do by just driving it to check out that 15 speed power shift? Current owner says say that previous owner had all the maintenance work on it performed at John Deere dealership. Person that owns it now the 3rd owner. I think he is a dealer, not for sure as he says he has not owned it very sing. It’s listed on Tractor House March 6 sale date.
Sorry for the long post but this will be my last tractor and want to try and get a good one.

I suggest if possible to drive tractor testing in each speed. Note how well trans shifts after hyd oil has reached operating temp. Be aware 466(6076) engine has timing gear powered water pump. If WP shaft seal fails & drain hole in WP housing is clogged coolant will get in crankcase. My 4255 with similar WP has required 2 WP's installed since I purchased it in '93

I dove a 4055 power shift yeserda 11,800 hrs. Motor overhaul but doesn’t remember when, had JD decal indicating it. Power shift jerked a little harder going from either 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 both ways. Rest of gears seem fine including reverse. I asked owner about it an he said it has been that way since JD put 2nd clutch in ( said they did something wrong on first one and warranted it) Tractor sounds good looks good except will have to put rock shaft seals in it. Also said has had MFWD seal’s applied by local mechanic 2-3 times. Owner says he changes it according to change interval show on instrument panel. Like the tranny fluid was leaking on ground and a little low, when I asked he didn’t seem to know how much it is leaking just keeps it full as needed. On a sale March 8 what do you think? May bring $40,000 according to locals it’s only 90 miles from me
