Waterloo built tractor.....Some had a 359 turbo, the 466 was more desirable but a
bit harder on fuel.

Yep, US built tractor. Well built. Just a matter of individual history. A 4050 built for the European market will have a claw type hitch for the lower 3pt lift arms and a parking brake among other things.

I wonder why they went to a 359 after using a 404 in the 4040? Easier on fuel or something?

The 50 series came out during the fall of 1982 for the 1983 model year. Manufacturers were struggling to keep their doors open. The 4050 used the 7.6L (466) until 1985 until JD needed to make more money off of that model then they used the 359.

359 cid has a cross flow head & will have better fuel economy than a 404. I agree with NY 986 earlier 4050 had 466 cid engines . I just discovered that according to JD parts some 4040's built for sales in N America had 359 cid engines. I knew 4040 built for European had 359 cid engines.

The 404 engine was dropped at time / end of 40 series production. The 4040 was the last model to have / use a 404. The 4050 was introduced with a fueled down non turbo 466 to prove to be a fuel hog and not that all efficient. Changing to the turbo charged 359 provided more power and used less fuel. Most people like them with the 359T. DW
