JD 4055 ???

Looking at a 4055 for sale with a quad range trans. I checked the trans fluid and the metal dipstick had rust on the first half of it.

Do you think the inside of the transcase is in the same cond?

DONT BUY TILL YOU HAVE IT CHECKED BY AN EXPERT!!!

Maybe they lost the dipstick, & got one from junk dealer; But those transmissions are terribly expensive to rebuild if bad!

I just bought a 3055 from a dealer, & had to drain about 3 -4 quarts of oil from a 12 quart crankcase. Boy did I call the dealer, & let them know! I know there is nothing leaking into the engine either!

Thanks for the reply, Deere Scotty.

The price is not low enough, if I run into trans problems. I'll look for one in better cond.

If you're really interested in the tractor, go to your dealer or a heavy truck shop and buy an oil analysis kit. Last time I checked they were $20. You take a little lab vile and drain some oil into it then send it off to the lab. They can tell you foreign particles (dirt, metal) breakdown of the oil and water content.

A quad range is a very good trans. They are not nearly as expensive to re-build as a powershift. A 3055 isn't half the tractor a 4055 is so can't compare those. Dip stick is probably rusted from condensation on it over the years. I have 2 4055 I purchased new in 1990. One now has 29000 hours on it and the other has 36000. Engine has been done once in each at about 19000 hours and Trans. in the 36000 at 24000 hours. Both are quad range. All I can say is they are one of the best tractors we have ever owned

Thanks for the info, NY6030puller.

I'm thinking of goin back next week and see if I can pull the trans filters to see how much stuff is in the filters.

I agree and my 4255 only has a measly 10000 hrs on it. The 55 series will rival the 4020's in notoriety some day!!!!!!!!!

I drove the tractor today and the trans indicator light was on. Do you think changing the fluid and filters will help?

The brakes had a chatter also. Do you think the moisture in the hyd. fluid is causing the brake problems?

Run, run away fast.
Unless you can get this tractor cheap enough that
a trans rebuild, brake rebuild, pto rebuild and
hydraulic system flush. Doesn't push the price past
market value.
If the trans was abused with the wrong or
contaminated oil. The rest of the tractor may have
been abused by the same person(s).

Yeah, I have that deep down filling also. I like the tractor, but it's owner abused it by not changing the fluids and filters on a regular basis.

I don't have to have this tractor, but I was trying to upgrade from my 4020 with a newer tractor with cab-ac.

I wanted a powershift any how.

Trans indicator light means low trans pump pressure or faulty sender which can only be determined with a gauge. Yes a filter, oil and clean sump screen could help. But light could be from a leaking hyd function such as pto valve, hyd seat, PS,2 speed(hi-Lo) or worn trans pump to name a few places.

Brake chatter could worn brake pads or owner not using JD Hy-Gard hyd oil.

Before purchase I'd want to test engine oil,hyd oil and coolant with samples.
