JD 420 tie rods

I am confused. Looking at replacement tie rod ends for the 420. Photos of replacements appear to just have dimples in the shaft and mine has a hole all the way through. So I am not sure if mine has been swapped, the replacements are wrong or ????

Any help would be appreciated.

Take a look at the adjustable end (tie rod) [b:654c4848f0]AM 3951[/b:654c4848f0] T on "[i:654c4848f0]Audie[/i:654c4848f0]" our Model 40S.

This part is also designed for the Model 420S and 430S.

Pure speculation on my part, but all replacements will probably have dimples.

Hope this helps.

That is what I a expected and mine has a pin that drops in from the top. Darn.

Thanks for confirming my fears. :-)

If the sloppy steering remains . The half moon key and the key way are wallowed out . In the steering shaft
Coupler and on the worm gear shaft
Into the steering box .

Not sure how many different designs of tie rods there is for the 420/430 series. The U's and the W's are different but look almost the same. The dimples aren't the same distance apart, hard top find U tie rod ends.

The ends of mine are totally worn out. Won't take much for the ball to fall out.

I still use mine and not worried about being original but just safe.Bush hog a few times a year and will be doing some landscaping with it next summer. I could modify the existing or replacements and looks like that is my only real options.

What happened is the nut that is welded on to the tube broke and someone just drilled a hole through the tie rod. You can do the same thing with the new one.

If you want to go back to the way it was from the factory just weld a 3/8 fine thread nut back over the hole. It uses a square head set screw with a jamb nut.

Like deeretails said there's a few different tie rod ends for the 420, I stopped counting at 6 front ends and 9 tie rod end numbers. Most look to be dimpled for adjustment but one used on the W adjustable front end Swept Back design uses an AT11745T tie rod, it has holes through it from top to bottom and uses a cap screw and nut to position it. Hope this helps. P.S. W adjustable Straight Design uses the dimpled style.
