I"m looking at a 2001 JD 4200 thats for sale. My intended use would be grading/maintaining a very long STEEP gravel drive. Would this unit work? Just sold my 8N as it did not quite handle the job with a rear blade. additionally it has a leaking seal on the front drive by the shaft end I believe. Whats involved in fixing same.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!!

Imho, 4200's were weak, esp if a hydro and in cold weather(below freezing). The other available transmission are proned to trouble and i would steer clear of them. However, for the work you are describing it will most likely work great for you. If it is a seal leaking its an easy fix as long as output shaft isnt grooved/scored. It would be a night and day differance compared to ur ol ford. Just make sure the price is right.

Make sure it is 4 wheel drive, I have a 4300 and I use 4 Wheel about 90% of the time. I doubt that a 2 wheel drive 4200 will pull as much as the 8N. The also reccommend about 600 lbs of ballast on the rear end. Russ

Needs a new bucket, hood and seat. Has almost 2850 hours. Looks clean, belongs to landscaping outfit that has 4, and are replacing them one at a time. Price $4500

Doesn't sound like enough tractor...not a much power as 8N...needing a bucket and sheetmetal sound like an abuser had it...I have a 4400 and it would probably do the job....but sounds like you need to go up to about 50 hp range for your needs. A 50 hp rear drive will pull the compacts backwards....ballast needs to be correct for you job....I'd recommend some more investigation and get someone also familar with compacts to check one out for you. They are extremely expensive to work on.

Deere 4005 M4WD ain't shabby and it would drag a N series Ford like a toy.
No previous abuse by casual employees either.
