JD 4255 PTO

4255 pto doesn't work. Tested the lube pressure with pto off and it was 20 psi checked it with the pto on and it dropped significantly. I think I am looking at a split. Is there a way to repair an internal leak without splitting? I just am not sure if there is an access point somewhere. Thanks!

I'd recommend checking pressure on pto clutch port. My guess is piston sealing ring(part key 13 &/or 11) has failed.

Thanks for the advice. I am trying to
find a quick coupler to check the ports.
Once I have one I am going to check the
clutch and brake ports to see what the
pressures are. I seen some stuff on here
about a double split but is that the
case for a pto on a powershift 4255? I
am hoping for a single split.

Well you were right, it was the piston seal that was shot. The clutch facings were almost completely gone as well. Now I'm wondering if I should continue digging in to replace the brake disks too. I'm not sure if there bad. Is there any way to tell without taking the input planetary out? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Short of pulling final drives to check brake linings the only other thing I can think to do is check trans screen for brake material accumulation. How many hrs are on tach? What type hyd oil has been used in tractor?

We just bought the tractor and the pto wasn't working. So oil and hours I am unsure of and the screen is probably full of the clutch linings. With the tractor split I left the pto shaft in the tractor in though the brake and turned it using a wrench. The only restriction on it is the brake. It took quite a bit of force to turn it with a 14 inch pipe wrench. How strong should the brake be? With the piston seal on the clutch being out would it cause the brake to go bad? Thanks for the help!

I completed the pto clutch repair a few months ago and tractor is running great. Brake seems to be working fine. Thanks for all of the help!
