Hi
Looking at buying a 4455 4wd with 4300hrs on the clock. Were these good tractors? Did they have any problems? How do they start cold? etc.
Any info would be appreciated.

Excellent tractor. They are beginning to show up on the used tractor market as people are upgrading to new tractors due to high grain prices.
Most desirable options (but not show stoppers) are duals, Firestone tires and triple hydraulics. Any or all of these can be added if needed/desired.

I've owned the 4455's little brother(4255) since '93. my 4255 has over 10,000 hrs and is still running fine. As stated the 55 series are some of the best tractors that wear the JD name & logo. Low houred 55 series bring a premium when sold.

The problems were minimal with the 4455 .They start good ,they are pretty quiet, the 15sp powershift is improved, their resale is real strong, the MFD worked well, probably should have kept making them but that progress.

I have seen very few problems with them. The ones i have seen were caused by abuse. The 55s were and are such good tractors, i know a customer of ours has a two wheel drive 4455 quad. It has 14,000 hrs on it and STILL looks like new and he uses it every day. Deere pretty much had those tractors refined to the T. Its sad that these new tractors are so terrible. Quality Control was better when the 55s were out than it is now.

We had one for a while, very nice tractor! 55 series had a little more engine noise than others and a water pump that would leak into crankcase. That being said they are good tractors just be aware of minor issues.

Clark,

Never had any major problems with our 4455 MFWD, or our 4255 2WD.

Have had the 4455 since new in '88, now in the 8000hr range, and the most invasive things done to it was the outer seals in the mechanical front had a very slow leak, just from wear and tear, and then the 3-point had a seal that would leak a quart or two after the tractor was put away for the day, but that's cause of the many many years, it's whole life, of use carrying 45, 60, and now 80 foot 3-point spray booms and the water pump has been worked on once. It also was our main tillage tractor for the first 10 years, pulling disk, field cultivator, and plow.

The 4255, bought used now 7800hr range, only has a leaky SCV from being run on a hydraulic motor on our feed grinder for many years, like 10+.
