hello,
i need an all around chore tractor and was wondering if anyone could offer me some insight on a 4520 side console. i will be counting on it as i farm full time. 8000 hours runs good and looks good. are they prone to problems or is there a better model i should be looking for. thanks for the advice.

everything from planting to hauling wagons, good to know about the pto shaft its pretty much useless to me with just a 1000. any suggestions?

It's not USELESS. You can buy 1000 rpm implements. In a pinch, you can buy an adapter to 540 and run the tractor half throttle. Most 540 implements don't need near the HP a 4520 will put out.

But, as Txjim said, it's not the best tractor Deere built. Many have been upgraded to a 4620 engine. A 4620 can be had for not a lot more money - usually the same amount.

Still I'd be scouting for something a bit more nimble, like a 4020 or 4320. You can tell what tractors are more useful and popular just by how much they cost. About any 4520 will go for 5-10k. A 4020 usually starts at 6K for fair ones and shoots up to 18K for excellent ones. There's a reason...

My neighbor has DEERE all the way from a little 650 to a 5403, to a 6420, and an 8210.

He's had a 4620 for a number of years for baling, pulling a mixer or feed wagon, bale shredder, etc., and even alongside his more modern tractors, he recently bought a second 4620 with a loader for "chore" use.

A 4320 would be a little better as it should[but not always] have both PTOs.Many 4520 have the 4620 update motor which is better and the 4520 came with small pump. They have a very heavy W.F cost about a third less than a 4020 and have excellent hydraulics.Depends on your H.P. requirements but the to me way too big and clumsy. If you could get a 4050/4455 MFWD you would be a lot happier but also spend about 3 times as much.

Not to be contrary or argumentative Larry. But a 50-55 series MFWD set for 30" rows isn"t exactly handy either. A 4520 would turn around in half the distance.

Boy but the 50/55 series would sure ride a lot better with a properly functioning Hydra-cushioned seat. But I'm biased because I've owned a 4255 since '93 and hated 4520 every since they were NEW.

You are correct Tired D they are limited even with fenders and stops removed. We always have them set wide on loader or chore tractors for that reason. On our bigger tractors we put large spacers to strattle 4 rows.I had never had a narrow front tractor since we had a 560 Int and got a 2520w/ narrow front and could not believe the difference for yard work
