I have a JD 455 with 728 hours, diesel with 60" deck. Lately, I have been having problems with the PTO engaging (mower deck) and after 5 - 10 minutes of cutting, the engine geins to die. When I switch off the PTO, the engine runs fine. What tests should I go through to narrow down the problem? I made sure the air filter was clean (air restriction gauge) is clear & perfectly clean. Please let me know if anyone has some ideas on narrowing this problem down so I don't have to get top the dealer and have an expense I can avoid, if at all possible...thank you

how is the fuel filter and fuel supply?

I'd check the battery and connections first and then the charging system output. If you don't get enough voltage it may be letting your fuel shut off shut it down. Those clutches draw alot of power !

Check that you don"t have a spindle bearing seizing up when hot or idler.

Could be a bad coil on the clutch.
