Jd 4640 4430 lights

Hi guys.
I have a friend I’m going to help work on the lights on these two tractors. How do you access the front fender wiring. I’m guessing it’s ground issues. It looks like two bolts and the front plastic will come off with the lights. Is that correct? Thanks for your help.

To access the wires going to the lights there's a metal cover on the backside of the light assembly under the fender. If I remember right the screws for the cover are self tapping and tend to strip out or break off. The LH fender light harness connects to the main harness under the LH front cab corner. You can make easier access taking the cab trim piece off right under the cab door.

Something to keep in mind about the 30 series is they didn't use relays like on the 40 series and had a bad tendency to melt the connector at the light switch. You can put a new connector on and new terminals if there's enough harness to work with. I've gotten to the point where I use a zip tie around the light switch to hold the connector tight on the switch. It does make the switch sit a little crooked in the dash but it's not noticeable to the someone that doesn't know about it.

You can take off the metal cover behind the lights up under the fenders as mentioned to check the ground connection. The other connections are on the back side of the bulbs. You should probably take each bulb out, use a wire jumper at the battery to make sure they work to begin with. I use a screwdriver to carefully pry the bulb out of the rubber housing but be very careful. I had a bad bulb with a crack in the face and when I pried it out it shattered and cut my finger badly.
